Convertus Group has secured CA$135 million (US$96.2 million) in project financing for its flagship York Region biofuel facility in Ontario, marking a significant step toward expanding Canada’s renewable natural gas (RNG) infrastructure.
The project will combine biomethane production, food-grade carbon dioxide liquefaction, and low-carbon fertiliser manufacturing from a single organic waste stream, supporting circular economy and resource recovery initiatives.
The financing was provided by Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit (PSIC), with Selkirk Advisory Group serving as financial advisor.
CA$135m Financing Advances Flagship Biofuel Project

The York Region facility has been designed to process up to 200,000 tonnes of source-separated organic waste annually, producing multiple low-carbon products while maximising resource recovery.

Alongside renewable natural gas, the facility will produce food-grade liquefied CO₂ and low-carbon liquid fertiliser, creating several high-value products from a single waste stream.
Integrated Technology Maximises Resource Recovery

The facility represents what Convertus describes as the next generation of anaerobic digestion infrastructure by integrating renewable gas production with carbon dioxide capture and fertiliser generation.

Benjamin Shenwick , Principal at Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit, highlighted the regional impact of the project.
“The York Biofuel Facility will provide essential environmental infrastructure for York Region and the Greater Toronto Area, adding critical long-term organics processing capacity through a state-of-the-art facility designed with robust operational redundancy.” He further noted that the project combines advanced technology with meaningful circular economy and decarbonisation benefits while supporting essential infrastructure development.
Commissioning Planned This Year
Construction continues at the York Biofuel Facility, with commissioning expected later this year and commercial operations scheduled to begin in early 2027.
Once operational, the facility will serve as the flagship of Convertus’ expanding organics infrastructure portfolio, demonstrating how integrated anaerobic digestion, biomethane production, CO₂ liquefaction and resource recovery can generate multiple low-carbon products from organic waste.
The investment also reflects growing momentum behind Canada’s renewable natural gas sector and advanced waste-to-energy infrastructure.
