European Energy Secures £58.1m for UK Solar + Battery Project

European Energy has secured £58.1 million in construction financing from Danske Bank for its Indian Queens hybrid renewable-energy project in Cornwall, combining utility-scale solar generation with battery storage on a shared grid connection.

The project brings together 68MW of solar capacity and a 47.5MW/95MWh battery energy storage system, with construction already underway and commercial operations planned for 2027.

The financing provides capital for physical delivery of the Indian Queens development rather than early-stage planning.

That distinction places the project squarely within the stronger infrastructure category: financing is secured, construction is active and commissioning has a defined target.

The hybrid configuration allows generation and storage to use the same grid infrastructure, improving utilisation of scarce connection capacity.

Storage Adds Flexibility to Solar Output

Indian Queens is designed as more than a standalone photovoltaic plant.

Its 95MWh battery can absorb electricity when solar production exceeds immediate market requirements and discharge later when additional grid supply is more valuable.

This creates a more flexible infrastructure asset and can reduce the limitations associated with solar’s daytime generation profile.

“Hybrid projects are becoming an increasingly important part of the renewable energy market.” said Jens Peter Zink, Deputy CEO at European Energy.

Contracted Revenue Supports Investment Case

European Energy says Indian Queens combines contracted renewable generation with battery-market flexibility.

The project is backed by a corporate power purchase agreement for solar generation and a Capacity Market Contract for the BESS, providing multiple revenue channels within the same asset.

That structure helps create the type of de-risked renewable infrastructure increasingly attractive to long-term lenders and investors.

Hybrid Projects Address Grid Constraints

One of the project’s most strategically relevant features is the shared connection.

Grid availability has become a major constraint for renewable-energy development across Europe. Building solar generation and batteries behind one connection allows the infrastructure to be used more efficiently rather than securing separate export capacity for each asset.

Indian Queens therefore demonstrates how project developers are increasingly combining generation, storage, financing and contracted revenue structures within the same development.

With physical construction progressing toward 2027 operations, the £58.1 million financing turns Indian Queens into a strong example of how utility-scale solar and batteries are evolving from separate technologies into integrated infrastructure assets.
